What It Is

HAZWOPER is the acronym for the federal Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response standard. It is a policy enforced by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), a government agency under the U.S. Department of Labor.

HAZWOPER applies to all employees or employer handling hazardous substances in in the following situations:

  • Cleanup operations required by a governmental body

  • Voluntary cleanup operations at sites recognized by the government as uncontrolled hazardous waste sites

  • Operations involving hazardous waste at sites covered by the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act of 1976

  • Operations at sites regulated by Title 40 Code of Federal Regulations and all emergency response operations.
