HAZWOPER is the acronym for the federal Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response standard. It is a policy enforced by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), a government agency under the U.S. Department of Labor.
HAZWOPER applies to all employees or employer handling hazardous substances in in the following situations:
Cleanup operations required by a governmental body
Voluntary cleanup operations at sites recognized by the government as uncontrolled hazardous waste sites
Operations involving hazardous waste at sites covered by the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act of 1976
Operations at sites regulated by Title 40 Code of Federal Regulations and all emergency response operations.
